The browser version needs no download and no account.

Update, August 31, 2026: the iPhone app has landed. When this post went up on August 12 there was no App Store listing and we said so rather than implying otherwise. KEYCAPS™ is now free on the App Store, and the availability lines below have been updated.

Quick answer: KEYCAPS™ is a free word game for up to eight players, with five ways to play together and no account for any of them, including a live race over Bluetooth that needs no wifi and no cell signal at all. Solo, it is a daily puzzle: two letters are fixed at the ends of the board and any real word that fits between them counts. It is free on the App Store and on Google Play, and also free to play in any browser at keyca.ps.

Here is the thing we most want you to know, before the rule, the modes or the pricing: eight people can play KEYCAPS at the same time, for nothing, and one of the ways they can do it needs no internet connection of any kind.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Almost every word game with a multiplayer mode assumes a network. Take the signal away, in a car, a cabin, a plane, a basement, a rural wedding, and the game quietly becomes a solitaire. KEYCAPS keeps working. One phone hosts, up to seven more join over Bluetooth, and everybody races the same live board with the bars at zero.

The game underneath is simple enough to explain across a table in ten seconds. You are given a start letter and an end letter, fixed, and any real word that fits between them counts. S at the front, M at the back: STEAM. SLAM. SERUM. SPASM. STARDOM. There is no hidden answer, which is why it works with a group at all. Nobody can spoil it, everybody scores their own words, and two people can clear the same board with almost nothing in common and both be entirely right.

Up to Eight Players, Five Ways, All of It Free

None of the following requires an account, a sign-up, an email address or a purchase. All of it is in the free version of the game.

1. Bluetooth, in the same room, with no signal. The one we are proudest of. Up to eight people sitting together race the same live board over Bluetooth, with no wifi and no cell service. One phone hosts, everyone nearby joins, and a friend who is not in the room can still take a seat from a browser. This is the mode for the plane, the cabin, the long train, the car park, the wedding in a field.

2. Online rooms for eight. Open a room and play a live board with up to eight people anywhere in the world. No friend list to build first and no account to make.

3. Pass and play, one phone. Hand a single device around a table. Nobody else installs anything, which makes it the fastest way to get a group of people who have never heard of this game actually playing it.

4. Send a code, a link or a QR. Take turns whenever you each get a minute, the way a correspondence game works. Good for a group chat that is never online at the same time.

5. Quick match. Get paired with the next player in the queue. No setup, no waiting on anyone you know.

Endless mode turns into something else entirely in a room. It becomes a knockout: every board you clear drains everyone else's clock, and the last person still running wins. Eight people, one shared timer being pulled in eight directions, is a very different evening than a crossword.

Why "No Account" Is the Part That Makes Eight Players Work

It is easy to read "no account required" as a privacy line, and it is one. But in a multiplayer game it is a much more practical thing than that: it is the only reason a group of eight ever actually starts playing.

Think about what normally happens when someone at a table says they have a game everyone should try. Seven people open a store listing. Seven people wait on a download. Then seven people hit a sign-up screen, and somewhere around the third email confirmation the moment is gone and everyone is back on their own phone. The friction is not the game. It is the eight-person cold start. (It is also the first thing to check in any game you pick for a group, as we lay out in our guide to the best word game to play with a group of friends.)

So KEYCAPS asks for nothing first. Open it and play. Join a room with a code. Take a seat from a browser without installing anything at all. Nobody is creating a profile at a dinner table, and nobody's phone number ends up in a friend graph they did not ask for. That last point is the same instinct behind everything we build, and we wrote about the general version of it in on-device AI versus cloud AI: the least risky data is the data an app never asks for.

The other half of the promise is that multiplayer is not a paid feature. Nothing about playing with eight people sits behind the $4.99 purchase or the KEYCAPS+ subscription. Those remove advertising and lift the daily hint cap. Neither one buys you a seat, a score, or any advantage over the person across the table.

How to Play

Three steps, and there is no tutorial to sit through.

1. Two letters. A start and an end, fixed at the ends of the board. S···M.

2. Find a word. Type whatever fits between them. STEAM. SLAM. SERUM. If it is a real word, it scores.

3. Clear the board. Five keypairs makes a board. Come back tomorrow for five more.

The rule fitting in a sentence is a design choice rather than a shortcut. A game you can explain in ten seconds is a game seven other people at a table will agree to try.

Where You Can Play KEYCAPS Right Now

We would rather be exact about this than vague, because availability posts that imply more than is true are a small betrayal of the reader.

iPhone: live. The app is on the App Store as KEYCAPS™ – Daily Word Puzzle, published by IROIRO, LLC, free to download with optional in-app purchases. It arrived on August 30, 2026, eighteen days after this post first said it was coming.

Android: live. The app is on Google Play as KEYCAPS™ – Daily Word Puzzle, published by IROIRO, LLC, free to download and rated for 3+.

Browser: live, and no download at all. keyca.ps serves today's Daily, the world leaderboard, and multiplayer rooms you can join with a friend code. It runs in any modern browser, including Safari on an iPhone, and it does not ask you to install anything or make an account. If you use it more than once, add it to your home screen and it will open like an app.

How KEYCAPS Is Different From Wordle

This is the comparison everyone reaches for, so it is worth doing honestly rather than defensively. Wordle is very good at what it does and we are not proposing to replace it.

There are two real differences. The first is the direction of the puzzle. Wordle is deduction: one answer, six attempts, and the colored feedback narrows the field until the answer is forced. Skill means using information efficiently. KEYCAPS is retrieval: both ends are already on the screen, nothing is hidden, and the question is what your own vocabulary can produce under the constraint. Skill means having more words and finding them faster.

The second is social shape. Wordle is a solo puzzle you compare afterwards. You play alone, then paste a grid of squares into a group chat. KEYCAPS is playable together, live, by up to eight people at once, including in a room with no internet. That is only possible because nothing is hidden: telling someone you got SERUM spoils nothing, so there is no reason to keep everyone apart.

If you want the wider view of this category, including what is still actually free and what quietly moved behind a paywall, we wrote an honest use-case-by-use-case comparison of the best free word games in 2026. Most of the recommendations in it are not ours.

What You Get When You Are Playing Alone

Every mode works the same way. Two letters at the ends, and the words that fit between them. What changes is the letters, the clock, the stakes, and who you are up against.

The Daily. Five keypairs, the same five for everyone, every day. Clear the board, keep your streak, and see your score against everyone who played today.

Adventure. A campaign that runs in worlds of ten levels, each with a look of its own and a CPU boss waiting at the tenth. Objectives vary: beat a target, hold out, or get through a run without missing once. It does not run out.

Endless. One clock, a fresh keypair after every word, and every letter you find buys back time. This is the mode that becomes the knockout when other people are in the room.

Three fixed tours, no clock. The Alphabet is thirteen keypairs covering all twenty-six letters exactly once. Seams is twenty same-letter keypairs, S···S down to the F···F that ends it. High Pair is twenty the dealer never deals.

Leaderboards worth climbing. Three ways to be scored, Letter Score, Longest Word and First Word, and every board narrows from the whole world down to the rivals you actually play against, which is the only comparison that ever really means anything.

Hints, when you are stuck. Hold the space bar to spend a hint keycap and reveal that letter wherever it appears. Everyone is handed the same letters each day, so a hint is a choice about how to spend a shared budget rather than an advantage you can buy your way into.

All of those work with no connection. The campaign, Endless and the three tours keep running on a plane or a subway. What needs a network is the shared stuff: fetching a new Daily, posting a score to a leaderboard, and online rooms. If you plan around connectivity a lot, our guide to using your phone abroad without data covers the same problem from the other end.

What It Costs

Three ways to have the same game, and the free one is not a demo.

Ad-supported: free. Every mode, every board, every keyboard, and all five multiplayer modes for up to eight players. Ten hint keycaps a roll and three rolls a day, the first free and the rest after an ad. An ad never appears on a gameboard and never interrupts a run.

Fan-supported: $4.99, once. The same game with no advertising, permanently. It is not a subscription and it will not become one. All three hint rolls come free with no ad to watch.

KEYCAPS+: $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with seven days free on the annual plan. No ads, no daily cap, unlimited hints, and two streak saves a month for the days life gets in the way.

One rule sits underneath all three: KEYCAPS+ sells tools, never items. Nothing on that page buys you a keyboard, a score, a seat or a place on a leaderboard. Money can buy you time and quiet. It cannot buy you evidence that you played, and it cannot buy you an edge over the seven other people in the room.

One Hundred Keyboards, and Why None of Them Are for Sale

The board wears a colorway, and there are one hundred. Six are yours from the start. Ninety-four are earned by playing, and ninety-one of the hundred come from Sanzo Wada's A Dictionary of Color Combinations, the 1933 Japanese reference that has quietly shaped a century of design work with its unusual, slightly off-kilter harmonies.

Not one of them can be bought at any price. That is the point. A collection you can buy is inventory, and a collection you cannot is a record of where you have been. It is a small thing that ties this game to the rest of what we make, which leans on Japanese aesthetics rather more than a word game normally would. If that corner interests you, our pieces on wabi-sabi and kintsugi come from the same place the palettes do.

What Is Next

The iPhone listing was the immediate one and it is done, which means all three surfaces are now live and the KEYCAPS page says the same thing this one does.

Beyond that, the honest answer is that the Daily and the room are the two things we intend to be good at for a long time. A word game's rule is easy to copy, and this one is easier than most, so the part worth defending is not the mechanic. It is the board being there every morning, and the fact that when eight people are sitting together with no signal, there is still a game on the table.

If you want to try it in the next thirty seconds without deciding anything: keyca.ps, no download, no account. Two letters are waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can play KEYCAPS together?

Up to eight players at once, on every multiplayer mode that supports a group. That applies to online rooms and to local play over Bluetooth alike, so eight people in the same room with no internet connection can race the same live board. There is no separate purchase, tier or account required to reach eight: the free version of the game plays with a full table.

Is KEYCAPS multiplayer free?

Yes. All five ways to play with other people are in the free version, for up to eight players, with no account and no sign-up. Nothing about multiplayer sits behind the $4.99 one-time purchase or the KEYCAPS+ subscription. Those two remove advertising and lift the daily hint cap, and neither buys a seat, a score or an advantage in a game against another person.

Can I play a word game with friends without wifi?

Yes. KEYCAPS lets up to eight people sitting together race the same live board over Bluetooth, with no wifi, no cell signal, no account and no cost. One phone hosts and everyone nearby joins, and friends who are not in the room can still take a seat from a browser. This is genuinely uncommon: most word games need a connection to sync a move, and most offline multiplayer lists are party minigames and trivia rather than word games.

What are the five ways to play KEYCAPS with other people?

One, a live race over Bluetooth for up to eight people in the same room with no internet at all. Two, an online room for up to eight players anywhere. Three, pass-and-play, where a single phone goes around a table and nobody else installs anything. Four, asynchronous play by code, link or QR, so you take turns whenever you each get a minute. Five, quick match against the next player in the queue. None of them requires an account and all of them are free.

What is KEYCAPS?

KEYCAPS is a free word game from IROIRO, LLC for one to eight players. A start letter and an end letter are fixed and any real word that fits between them counts. S to M gives you STEAM, SLAM, SERUM. There is no hidden answer to guess, so two people can clear the same board without a single word in common. Solo it is a daily puzzle of five keypairs, the same five for everyone, and it also includes a campaign, an endless mode and three fixed tours.

Where can I play KEYCAPS?

Three places. The iPhone app is on the App Store as KEYCAPS – Daily Word Puzzle, free to download. The Android app is on Google Play under the same name, also free. And the game is free to play in any modern web browser at keyca.ps, with no download and no account, which works in Safari on an iPhone as well as on a desktop.

Is KEYCAPS on the App Store for iPhone?

Yes. The iPhone app went live on the US App Store on August 30, 2026, as KEYCAPS – Daily Word Puzzle from IROIRO, LLC, free to download with optional in-app purchases. When this post was first published on August 12 the listing did not exist and we said so plainly rather than implying otherwise; this is the promised update. iPhone owners who would rather not install anything can still play free in Safari at keyca.ps.

How is KEYCAPS different from Wordle?

Two differences. Wordle hides one answer and asks you to deduce it, so everyone who solves it ends at the same word, while KEYCAPS hides nothing and asks what your own vocabulary can produce between two fixed letters. And Wordle is a solo puzzle you compare afterwards, while KEYCAPS is playable live with up to eight people at once, including in a room with no internet connection. The daily rhythm is similar. What you are actually doing is not.

Does KEYCAPS need an account or an internet connection?

No account, no sign-up and no email address, on any surface, including multiplayer. Every solo mode works offline, so the campaign, the endless mode and the three fixed tours keep working on a plane or a subway with no signal, and local Bluetooth multiplayer needs no connection either. What does need a network is fetching a new Daily, posting to a leaderboard, and online rooms.

Is KEYCAPS free?

Yes. The free tier is the whole game: every mode, every board, every keyboard and all five multiplayer modes for up to eight players, funded by advertising that never interrupts a board and never appears on one. Two optional upgrades exist. Fan-supported is $4.99 once, permanently, to remove ads, and it is never a subscription. KEYCAPS+ is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year with seven days free on the annual plan, and it adds unlimited hints with no daily cap plus two streak saves a month. KEYCAPS+ sells tools, never items: no amount of money buys a keyboard.

What are the keyboards in KEYCAPS?

One hundred colorways for the board itself. Six are yours from the start and ninety-four are earned by playing, and ninety-one of the hundred are drawn from Sanzo Wada's A Dictionary of Color Combinations, the 1933 Japanese reference on color harmony. None of them can be bought at any price, which is deliberate: a keyboard is evidence that you played, and that stops being true the moment it has a price tag.

Is KEYCAPS suitable for kids?

The Google Play listing is rated for 3+. The game itself is a vocabulary game with no violent or mature content, and it requires no account, no sign-up and no email address, which removes the usual data-collection question. The things worth a parent's attention are the ones any connected game has: advertising on the free tier, in-app purchases, and the public leaderboards and online rooms. Pass-and-play and Bluetooth local play involve no strangers at all, which makes them the family-friendliest way to play together.

Platform availability, pricing and store ratings can change, and vary by region. Everything above reflects what we could verify on August 31, 2026. Check the current App Store or Google Play listing for the live price and details in your country.
