How to Separate Memes From Photos on iPhone: Four Ways, From a Filter to a Clean Camera Roll (2026)

Scroll back a year in your camera roll and the vacation pictures are buried under reaction GIFs and screenshots of posts. Your iPhone has no meme folder, but it does have a few tools that get you most of the way there. Here is why the memes end up mixed in, and four ways to separate them, from a two-tap filter to a camera roll with no memes in it at all.

Quick answer: iPhone keeps memes and photos in one library, so nothing splits them automatically. To see only your own pictures, open Photos, tap the sort and filter button in the Library and choose Captured by Me. To get memes out for good, move them into a meme app and delete them from Photos. MeMemes is ours: free to start, iPhone and iPad.

Why Your Memes End Up in Your Camera Roll

The Photos app has one library. Every time you tap Save Image in Safari, Save on a picture in Messages, or the download button in Reddit, X or Instagram, the file lands in that library next to the pictures your camera took, sorted into Recents by the day you saved it. Photos does not record that it was a meme. To the library, a reaction GIF from 2019 and your sister's wedding are both just images.

Two more sources fill it up by default. Apple says that screenshots and photos and videos shared with you in Messages appear in your library automatically. And with iCloud Photos on, all of it syncs to your iPad and Mac too, so the clutter follows you.

That is also why people who back up "just the camera roll" to another service find thousands of memes in it. One Adobe Lightroom user put it plainly in a forum thread: they now had to "manually delete 2000 memes" the app had imported along with their photos. The fix is to decide where memes live before the next backup, which is what the four options below do.

Four Ways to Separate Memes From Photos, by How Far You Want to Go

OptionWhat it doesMemes still in your library?Easy to send a meme?
1. Filter the libraryShows only what you shotYes, just out of viewYes, from the photo picker
2. Memes album and keywordGathers memes in one placeYes, in Recents tooYes, from the album
3. Hide themMoves them to a locked collectionOnly in HiddenNo
4. A meme appGives memes their own libraryNo, once you delete themYes, inside iMessage

The menus below are from current iOS. On an older version some filters and the Keywords feature may be missing or named differently.

1. Filter your library to the photos you took

This changes nothing in your library. It only changes what you see, which is often all you want.

  1. Open Photos and scroll the Library.
  2. Tap the sort and filter button and choose Captured by Me. Saved memes, downloads and images from other apps drop out of view. You can combine filters, and Media Types narrows the view to photos, videos or screenshots.
  3. To clear the view for good, tap the same button, then View Options, and tap Screenshots and Shared with You to hide them from the library. Tap again to bring them back.
  4. Tap Remove Filters when you want everything back.

Where it runs out: a filter is a view, not a separation. Every meme is still in the library, still in iCloud, still in any backup, and still in your way the next time you scroll without the filter.

2. Gather memes into an album, with a keyword

Photos reads text inside images, which is the trick for finding memes in bulk: most memes have a caption.

  1. Tap Search in Photos and type words memes tend to use, such as "me when", "nobody", "pov" or "lol". Search also finds images by category and, on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence, by a description like "cartoon frog".
  2. Tap Select, pick the memes in the results, and add them to a new album called Memes.
  3. On current iOS you can also add a keyword: open a meme, tap the info button, tap Add Keywords and type "meme". Searching that keyword later brings every tagged meme back at once.

Where it runs out: an album only points at items in the library. Every meme you add to it still appears in Recents, so this organizes the memes without separating them. It is a good first step before options 3 and 4, because it collects everything you are about to move.

3. Hide them

Hiding is the one built-in way to take a meme out of the main library without deleting it.

  1. In the Library or your Memes album, tap Select and pick the memes.
  2. Tap the More button, then Hide.
  3. They move to the Hidden collection, under Utilities in Collections, which is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. With iCloud Photos on, they are hidden on all your devices.

Where it runs out: Apple's own description is that hidden photos "can't be viewed anywhere else." That is right for private pictures and wrong for memes, whose whole point is being sent. Sending one means unlocking Hidden, unhiding it, and sending it from there.

Give Your Memes a Library of Their Own

MeMemes keeps your memes, GIFs and stickers apart from your photos, in packs and tags that sync over iCloud between iPhone and iPad. On-device AI tags each one by the text, faces and objects in it, and the whole library opens inside iMessage with search. Free to start with 12 memes and 4 packs.

4. Move them into a meme library, then delete them from Photos

This is the only option that leaves a camera roll with no memes in it, because the memes stop living in Photos at all. It takes three steps:

  1. Import the memes into a meme app. Your Memes album from option 2 is the easiest place to start.
  2. Check they arrived. Open the app and scroll the collection before you touch Photos.
  3. Delete them from Photos. Select the album's contents and delete. With iCloud Photos on, this deletes them from every device signed in to your Apple Account, and they wait 30 days in Recently Deleted before they are gone, so a mistake can be recovered.

From then on, save new memes straight to the app from the share sheet instead of to Photos, and the camera roll stays clean.

MeMemes is the app we make for this, so weigh our view accordingly. It imports memes, GIFs, stickers and clips from Photos, Files, Safari or any app's share sheet (GIF, MP4, PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC and audio), keeps them in custom packs with tags, and syncs the library over iCloud between your iPhone and iPad. On-device Vision AI reads the text, faces and objects in each meme, and Smart Packing sorts a library into groups such as Reactions, Animals, Text Memes and Screenshots, which is most of the sorting work done for you. The iMessage extension opens your whole library in any conversation with search, so separating memes from photos makes them faster to send, not slower.

Pricing and limits: free with 12 saved memes and 4 packs. That is enough to try it, not to clear out a camera roll with hundreds of memes in it; for that you need Pro, at $1.99 a month, $14.99 a year (with a 3-day free trial) or $29.99 once, for unlimited memes and packs. It needs iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, and there is no Android version.

Two other App Store apps are built around the same problem. MemeMaid says it scans your photo library with on-device AI, tags the memes it finds and groups them into collections, with a $4.99 one-time unlock. MemeCommander bulk-imports memes from Photos into its own tagged library and puts the imported ones in an album in Photos so you can delete them there yourself. If neither iMessage sending nor GIFs matter to you, one of them may be the better fit; our comparison of meme organizer apps covers more.

Which Option Should You Pick?

If the memes only bother you while you look at your photos, use the Captured by Me filter and leave everything where it is. If you want them findable but are fine with them in the library, make a Memes album and tag them with a keyword. If you want them out of sight and rarely send them, hide them. If you send memes every day and want a camera roll that is only your life, give them their own library in a meme app and delete them from Photos. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I separate memes from photos on my iPhone?

iPhone keeps memes and photos in one library, so there is no setting that splits them. To see only your own pictures, open Photos, tap the sort and filter button in the Library and choose Captured by Me. To get the memes out for good, move them into a meme app such as MeMemes, check they arrived, and delete them from Photos.

Can I make a separate meme folder on iPhone?

You can make a Memes album in Photos and add memes to it, but an album only points at items in your library. Every meme in the album still appears in your main library and Recents. To keep memes out of the library, hide them or move them into a separate meme app.

Why do saved memes show up in my camera roll?

Every Save Image or Save to Photos, from Safari, Messages, Reddit, X or any other app, adds the file to the same Photos library as the pictures your camera takes. Photos shared with you in Messages and screenshots also appear in the library by default. Photos has no idea which images are memes.

How do I hide memes from my camera roll without deleting them?

Tap Select in the Library, pick the memes, tap the More button and choose Hide. They move to the Hidden collection under Utilities, which is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, and with iCloud Photos they are hidden on all your devices. Hidden items cannot be viewed anywhere else, so they are hard to send.

How do I find a meme I saved on my iPhone?

Search Photos for words that appear in the meme. Photos reads text inside images, so a line from the caption usually finds it. On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence you can also describe the image. A meme app such as MeMemes tags each meme by its text, faces and objects and searches them inside iMessage.

Is there an app that keeps memes separate from photos?

Yes. MeMemes, our app, keeps memes, GIFs and stickers in their own library of packs and tags, synced with iCloud, and opens it inside iMessage. It is free for 12 memes, with Pro at $1.99 a month, $14.99 a year or $29.99 once, on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18. MemeMaid and MemeCommander are other meme organizers on the App Store.
